How Does a Reading Escape Work?

  • Students read a short fictional story. In the story, students arrive at school and discover that the teacher is missing. They find a mysterious message on the classroom whiteboard.
  • The story is provided in two versions. Version 1 is worded for use at the beginning of the school year, while version 2 can be used any time of the year!
  • They will complete 4 puzzle tasks. Each puzzle gives the students a secret word.
  • After collecting 4 Secret Words, students use a decoder to create a 4-digit number.
  • The 4-digit number ends the mystery and The Case of the Missing Teacher.
  • Follow up this breakout with a STEM Challenge of your choice to get your STEM year started!

What is the story?

Students will read a short fiction story about a teacher who is “hiding” in a storage closet. She challenges the students to find her and unlock the door.

  • The story and the tasks are all school-related.
  • In the story, the teacher tells students to complete four puzzles to find her and open the “locked” door.
  • NOTE: The story is fiction. A teacher is not missing or behind a locked door. The story sets the stage for completing four puzzles and finding a lock code for a “pretend” lock.
