Halloween Pumpkin Catapult

What is the challenge?

• Students will design and build a launching device to propel a piece of candy through the air and attempt to hit a target.
• The candy is your choice. We used candy pumpkins. In the resource, I included a full page of ideas for alternative projectiles!
• Students have specific rules to follow in building the launching device and, of course, rules about launching the candy.
• The class will culminate with a target blasting opportunity for everyone!

What is your prep?

You will also need supplies for this package. This includes craft sticks, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, masking tape, 3-ounce cups, straws, plastic spoons, candy, foam cups, and an item to launch.

The package specifically includes:

• Teacher background
• Materials and preparation page
• 6 pages of teacher directions including a full page of tips
• 1 full page of ideas for using alternative projectiles!
• 4 pages of photographs
• 3 versions of constraints posters with matching lab sheets- one set is labeled for Pumpkin Launchers, one set is for Candy Launchers, and one set is generic for any projectile
• Sample answer lab sheet
• Scoring rubric worded for use with any projectile
• Editable file- ALL student forms are editable

This challenge will need 1 class session (1 hour) to complete.
