My first plan for this Soccer Goal Sports Challeng

My first plan for this Soccer Goal Sports Challenge was to build the soccer goal net and the player. This, however, turned out to be too easy. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Students could easily "kick" the ball in. So, we had to work to modify the rules. The new rule: The goalie must be attached to the net. I know, I know... real soccer goalies are not attached, but they do have limited movement.⁠⁠

This made the activity more challenging- which is exactly what fifth graders needed.⁠⁠
⁠⁠

Funny story- For our Football STEM Challenge I really thought I needed a tiny football. I found those plastic ones in a bag with many different ones- basketball, soccer balls, baseballs, and ordered them. They are fabulous- just wayyy too big.⁠⁠

So, then I went to the party store for something else and found those furry footballs. They were actually attached to a hairband. They work well but were a tad too heavy.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
You know what works perfectly. Ping-pong balls and you can grab a pack of 8 at Dollar Tree. 🤣⁠⁠

Way to use those paper cups! Here is a great tip I learned the hard way- foam cups do not make a great springboard for a catapulting device. They crack! 🎃⁠⁠

Paper cups work well because they are flexible. However, they are hard to find at a great price. I found some in the party section of Dollar Tree and a local vendor donated a whole box to us. 🎃⁠⁠

If you cannot find paper cups like these use cardboard tubes! 🎃⁠⁠

Let's get serious about pumpkin launchers! The first time we tried this challenge I did not have a rule about holding the launcher in your hands or making slingshots. But, I added some rules. Here is why...⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Holding a slingshot-type device in your hands makes your arms part of the catapulting motion. So, some of our models only worked well because the launching person was basically "throwing" the pumpkin. Also, slingshots are dangerous (rubberbands fly off.) So, we added these rules: The launcher cannot be handheld. The launcher cannot be a slingshot.⁠⁠

PHOTO 1- This team created a slingshot that sits on the floor. It takes all three team members to make this work. But it does sit on the floor. Have they broken the rules? ⁠⁠
