First photo- the tricky part of the Ferris Wheel is making the frame sides "match". If the turning wheel is a little wonky from a crooked frame it won't turn correctly. SWIPE to see the trickiest part of the Roller Coaster!⁠

It's making those loops! The loop must be the right size to have a marble make the turn and, of course, kids want to make giant loops (which don't work as well).⁠

One of the things you have to prepare for building

One of the things you have to prepare for building roller coasters will be those foam insulation tubes. Super easy to cut them in half and get ready to make loops. SWIPE to see one! And here's more about those tubes⬇️⁠

Yes, it is an investment to buy those tubes, but we use them over and over and over. I have a box the tubes fit into and store them from one year to the next. I have rules about cutting the tubes (students cannot cut them) and be careful removing tape from the tubes (no tearing, peel off to prevent ripping the tubes). ⁠

You can see how similar the two towers are- Bucket

You can see how similar the two towers are- Buckets and Tennis Balls. Both hold something aloft. Look closely at the Tennis Ball photo- Great platform, right?⁠

Well, the team has to use all of the materials so notice the smaller straws tucked under the craft stick platform. Those tiny straws really provide zero support- but what a clever way to use them!⁠

In the Bucket Tower, the team must build a structure that will hold a bucket aloft a specific distance from the tabletop. SWIPE to see a different tower with the same requirement.⁠

It's the Tennis Ball tower- that ball must be held aloft. But there's a "catch"...⁠
⁠
Students must use ALL of the materials- what a fabulous problem to solve- how can you use everything? Check out how the team in the photo used the string to help hold up their structure!⁠
